Coanimated with Gabriella Ditton and Oliver Pendle, and voiced by Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Hiveminds was created as part of Random Acts, commissioned by Screen South Ignition Network, in partnership with the Arts Council.
A short animated film that explores anonymity, individuality and conformity in social media. The definition of "Hiveminds" is a notional entity consisting of a large number of people who share their knowledge or opinions with one another, regarded as producing either uncritical conformity or collective intelligence. Our film explores whether you become part of the collective or whether the collective becomes a part of you. The film is in the form of a poem written as the stream of consciousness from the perspective of the anonymous user. A dark, dystopian and disturbing film about how we are pressured to conform on the Internet, and therefore lose our sense of individuality. Abstract and colourful, it engages the viewer with striking, sometimes hard to watch visuals and disconnected sounds. A visceral experience that aims to have the audience questioning their own connection to social media, and their disconnection from the real world.
